Symbols
A very big symbol in the story is the " Gedwëy Ignasia" or "the Shining Palm". It symbolizes the bond between a dragon and his/her rider.
Zar'roc- It once was used for evil, but Eragon gave (forged) it a new history. Instead of betraying his friends like Galbatorix did, he used it to free his people and all those affected by the Evil Kings' tyranny.
Magic is a big symbol as well. Not only is it a language, its power. So in short, magic symbolizes power... And a lot of it.

Themes
Language and communication
Language and communication bring the fantasy to life in Eragon. This book has the words of magic—just flip to the glossary at the back. No joke. This book comes with its own stinkin' glossary. Not only are there strange, new languages in this book , but there are also new modes of communication. For example, Eragon and Saphira have a mental bond that allows them to communicate telepathically. That's some serious communication if you ask me. In the end, the way Eragon talks to his dragon and to the rest of the world is a direct reflection of both his own power and the power of communication in general.
Friendship
Though he faces down Shades, Urgals, and lots of other bad people that want him killed dead, Eragon always has peeps in his corner to help him win and keep him alive. They range from a blue dragon, to an old warrior, to a skilled swordsman with a mysterious past. In every case, their friendship with Eragon goes to show that even the most heroic among us must depend upon the support of our closest pals.
